Monmouth RFC win the 8th edition of rugby´s Ciutat d´Eivissa

What a turn out we had for this years tournament with 4 great teams from all parts of Europe. Gernika Rugby Club from the basque country in the north of Spain, the Old Maraboes Association from Maastricht in Holland, the Vets and youth of Ibiza´s Invitation XV and our worthy winners from Wales - Monmouth RFC.

Each team in the tournmanet played 3 x 30 minute games (15 min each way) with a great friendly atmosphere as we kicked off at 11am. The teams were a little worse for wear due to the volcanic ash cloud that kept the teams in the bars of San Antonio´s West End until 4.30 am, but great rugby was still to be played under the sun of Ibiza with Ibiza winning the 1st game 19-0 against Gernika.  Old Maraboes vs Monmouth were next up with the Welsh being just too strong fot the Dutch, winning 34-0. One of the toughest matches of the day was the Gernika - Monmouth clash which was next up, the Monmouth boys taking the game 12-0.

After the lunch/beer break, Gernika and Old Maraboes re-started the rugby with a great game but the young heads of Pays Basque were too much for the Dutch running out a fine 24-5 win. By now Old Maraboes (who are not that old at all) were flagging and in the following game against Ibiza started to sound Welsh or maybe Maastricht is twinned with Pontypool...Ibiza ran out 24-0 winners making the last game of the day ¨winner takes all¨.

The last match of the day was a great game of rugby with Monmouth up 3-0 at the break. This match was as tight as big John from Monmouth´s jockstrap but the Welsh scrum (with a front row that wouldn´t be out of place at the Millenium Stadium) and  a line-out that Warren Gatland should have a look at, took hold of the game just like the Monmouth crowd had taken the West End all week. They won the game and therefore the tournament beating Ibiza 17-0.

It was then on to dinner,  all the teams met up at San Antonio´s hotel Putxet where the food and wine was wonderful but more importantly,  in abundance, this is where the Old Maraboes came to life....Speeches and inter-club gift trading followed with Monmouth started the singing, but then the Dutch took over. For what they had lacked on the field due to their ¨punishing 4 day schedule¨ they made up for with their singing!

This tournament has defintely been one of the best to date. It had great teams and personalities, good rugby, a friendship that only rugby can offer, roll on 2011 if 2010 is anything to go by!
